GRADE 9 VISUAL ARTS PACKAGE (2 credits)
This two credit package consists of two academic credits. All credits are offered at the open level. It is mandatory that students choose both course codes. The program is considered a full year package. This package cannot be split and is the prerequisite for the Grade Ten package.
Visual Design
AWD1OA (1 credit) Students will apply the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various art media. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism and will study the characteristics of particular historical art periods and a selection of Canadian art and the art of other cultures. This course will include the study of history/design, drawing/painting, colour/computer graphics.Printmaking
AWO1OA (1 credit) In this course traditional, contemporary and experimental printmaking processes will be taught along with ceramic and computer graphic techniques. This course will include the study of printmaking, drawing, and ceramics.
GRADE 10 VISUAL ARTS PACKAGE (2 Credits)
This two credit package consists of two academic credits. Both credits are offered at the open level. It is mandatory that students choose both course codes. The program is considered a full year package. This package cannot be split and is the prerequisite for the grade eleven package.
Sculpture
Grade 10, Open (AWP2OA) (1credit) Skills and techniques in sculpture, painting, and drawing will be the focus of this course. Through the process of creative problem solving students will develop personal imagery and expression. The above course has 3 components Painting, Sculpture and Mixed Media.Media Arts
Grade 10, open (ASM2OA) (1credit) This course will develop students' artistic knowledge and skills by introducing them to current media arts technologies and processes. Student learning will include the analysis, appreciation, and production of media art, using a variety of traditional techniques (e.g. photography, film, photocopy, photocopy art, video, analog sound recording) and emergent technologies (e.g. computer, digital camera, scanner, multimedia, animation). Discussions and critiques will be enriched through the study of historical and contemporary artists' works and their application in studio projects. The above course has 3 components, computer graphics, Drawing/animation and Art History/Design equaling 1 credit.
GRADE 11 VISUAL ARTS PACKAGE (4 Credits)
This program consists of 4 credits. All credits are offered at the university/college level (designated by M in the course code). It is mandatory that students choose all course codes in the Grade 11 Art package. This course of study is a full year program and is a prerequisite for the Grade Twelve Art Studio Program. This package cannot be split.
Drawing and Painting
Grade 11, University/College (AWM3M1) (1 credit) Skills and techniques in life drawing and painting will be the focus of this course. Through creative problem solving, students will develop personal imagery and expression.Printmaking
Grade 11, University/College (AWO3M1) (1 credit) In this course traditional, contemporary and experimental printmaking processes will be taught. Discussions and critiques will be enriched through the study of historical and contemporary artists' works and application in studio projects.Ceramics
Grade 11, University/College (AWC3M1) (1 credit) Students will use clay to create expressive sculptural and functional pieces. The work and styles of traditional and contemporary potters and ceramists will be studied and applied during critiques and studio processes. This credit course consists of the following components: Ceramics, IllustrationMedia Arts
Grade 11, University/College (ASM3M1) (1credit) This course focuses on the development of media arts skills through the production of art works involving traditional and emerging technologies. Students will also learn about traditional photography as an expressive art form. The history of art as it relates to photography will be included and the role of digital imaging and manipulation may be included in the studio projects.
GRADE 12 VISUAL ARTS PACKAGE (4 Credits)
This program consists of 4 credits. All credits are offered at the university/college level (designated by M in the course code). It is mandatory that students choose all course codes in the Grade 12 Art package. This course of study is a full year and the package cannot be split.
Painting
Grade 12, University/College (AWN4M1) (1 credit) Students will develop skills and techniques in painting and drawing using a variety of tools and materials. They will design creative solutions to problems as they discover vehicles for effective visual communication. This course will also focus on preparing and developing a portfolio for post secondary education.Information/Consumer Design
Grade 12, University/College (AWE4M1) (1 credit) Students will learn how the elements and principles of design are used to communicate through areas such as commercial art, advertising, graphic design, packaging design, and television. A critical look at the careers and work of both contemporary and past professional graphic designers will complement studio projects. Computer graphics and video production will be important components of this course.Sculpture
Grade 12, University/College (AWP4M1) (1 credit) Students will use materials such as clay, plaster, metal, plastics, bronze, and found materials to produce art works in relief and in the round. Through the study of traditional and contemporary artists and media, students will come to understand sculpture as an art form. A critical study of works by historical and contemporary artists will be integrated throughout the course.Printmaking
Grade 12, University/College (AWO4M1) (1 credit) In this course traditional, contemporary, and experimental printmaking processes will be taught such as; screen, relief, and intaglio. Students' understanding and application of the medium will be expanded through a study of historical and contemporary printmaking across a variety of cultures. Life drawing and drawing techniques will also be major part of this course.
Visual Arts, Grade 12 PORTFOLIO COURSE
Visual Arts, Grade 12, University/College Preparation Package
(AA4AO) (4 credits – 1 college credit from Centennial College, 1 credit OSSD, and 2 grade 12 credits)
This course offers in depth exploration and technical expertise in the areas of sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, and photography. It provides an opportunity for students to create and complete a portfolio of professional standard. This course would also allow students to focus on what is needed to enter college, university, or the work force. This course will consist of The Dual Credit Program, a variety of studio classes and Contemporary Art History. Prerequisite: Visual Arts, Grade l2, University/College Preparation or Open
